General information
SWEA Orange County
offers an annual scholarship to one or two fulltime university students interested in getting to know the Swedish culture, country, and language while conducting university studies at selected universities in Sweden. The amount of the scholarship is determined each year by the members of SWEA Orange County and is typically $5000. The scholarship is available to students of sophomore or higher standing accepted to the UC Education Abroad Program (UCEAP) at the University of California, Irvine, or UCI. UCEAP has partnerships with the universities of Lund and Stockholm.
Minimum GPA required is 3.0.
The qualified applicant must apply for SWEA OCs Scholarship at UCI Office of Financial Aid and Scholarship via the online ScholarshipUniverse (SU) platform. Besides filling out an application form there, the applicant must also answer a couple of questions in essay form describing the purpose of the visit as well as the reason for the interest in Sweden.
After studying the online applications, SWEA OC Scholarship Committee selects and recommends the most worthy candidate to SWEA Orange County Board of Directors in the spring before the upcoming academic year.
The chosen student will be expected to attend a SWEA event to accept the scholarship. SWEA OC also expects the recipient to share his/her/their experiences and impressions of Sweden with SWEA OC, typically in writing.
The scholarship is not available for any member of SWEA Orange County.

SWEA OC has awarded a number of students scholarships through the years. The selection process of yesteryears needed a revamp in the beginning of 2020s, but the basic philosophy have always been the same: to support a worthy student with his or her studies of Swedish culture and language.
